Diabetic Ketoacidosis, 19-Year-Old Female

Cat 2 — 19-year-old female, known type 1 diabetic, vomiting and abdominal pain for two days, increasingly drowsy.

On arrival

Patient lying on bed, deep sighing (Kussmaul) breathing, fruity smelling breath, dry mucous membranes. Reports she has been unwell and not taking insulin.

Initial observations

Airway: Patent
RR: 32, deep Kussmaul breathing
SpO2: 98% on air
Pulse: 122 regular
BP: 98/60 mmHg
Blood glucose: 28.4 mmol/L
GCS: 13 (E3 V4 M6)
