How to reference JRCALC guidelines

JRCALC is a corporate-authored book, not a journal article, which is why it trips students up. The author is the Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaison Committee together with the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives, the publisher is Class Professional Publishing, and the edition year matters. Your university's own style guide always takes precedence over the patterns below.

Harvard — reference list

Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaison Committee and Association of Ambulance Chief Executives (2022) JRCALC clinical practice guidelines. Bridgwater: Class Professional Publishing.

Harvard — in text

(JRCALC and AACE, 2022) or, after spelling the body out once in full, (JRCALC and AACE, 2022, p. 145).

Vancouver — reference list

JRCALC Plus app

Five mistakes markers pick up

  • Citing 'JRCALC' as an author with no year or publisher — your marker cannot tell which edition you used.
  • Referencing a guideline you read second-hand in a lecture slide or revision site. Cite the guideline itself, or cite the source you actually read.
  • Mixing the pocket book, the full guidelines and the app in one reference. They are separate items with separate entries.
  • Omitting the page or guideline section for a specific dose or threshold — quantitative claims need a locator.
  • Assuming the edition you were taught on is current. Check the edition and update the year before you submit.

Revise the guidance you are citing

Every Paraready question carries a rationale and the guideline area it comes from, so you can trace an answer back to the publication.
